Louisiana — along with a large portion of the country — has been hit with severe winter weather, putting millions of people indoors and off the roads. The snow and ice has also resulted in power outages or, if you’re lucky enough to have power, energy conservation efforts.
So, what can you do during a random day indoors? We’ve got a few ideas to keep you busy!
Prepare for completing your taxes. Tax season is upon us and, although this isn’t always a fun activity, you can spend a little bit of time gathering and organizing the documents you’ll need to get them done on time. This will mean another item you can check off your to-do list, and perhaps you’ll save a little money ensuring you get things turned in on time. If you’re not sure how long to keep certain financial documents, download our spreadsheet.
Take a look at your winter gear. Open up the closet and evaluate what you’ve got for the winter season: hats, gloves, scarves, coats, etc. Are there gloves missing? Are there coats that no longer fit the kids? If so, start a donate pile. This is also a good time to take a look at any other cold weather equipment, such as ski pants or snowboards. Make a list of items that need to be replaced before your next trip.
Evaluate your gumbo pot collection. Remember when you saved all of those tall pots? Take another look when you’re prepping for tonight’s gumbo or chili and see if there’s anything you can donate. What about that recipe collection? Maybe it needs some organizing, too.
Pull out the photo albums. This is a great time to take a look at your photos — printed and digital — and get them organized. For step-by-step instructions on how to organize your photos and memorabilia, take a look at our tips and methodology.
Break a sweat. If you’ve got a collection of at-home workout equipment, create your own at-home exercises since the gyms are closed. If the kids are interested, make it a family event — jump rope contest? Sit-up challenge? It’s a good way to warm up!
Hit the books. If you’d rather relax, head over to your bookshelf and find a book you haven’t read. Maybe there’s one you’ve been wanting to read but haven’t had the time. Or, maybe there’s an old favorite you can revisit. If you’re in the mood to organize, see if there’s any books you can donate, or swap with a friend.
Get some quality time with the family. Make some hot chocolate and pull out that box of puzzles and games. Puzzle with missing pieces? Time to toss! Games that aren’t as fun as they used to be? Donate! If there’s still some good fun to be had, savor it!
No matter how you decide to spend these next frigid days of winter, stay warm and safe!
